The men and women of Conner’s Pub (4-0-0) have clinched their second consecutive season championship, thanks to a Week 2 sweep over Brockway and Goose. The first match of the day featured Brockway (1-3-0) taking on a depleted Goose (1-3-0) side who found themselves without key players Ciaran Connery and Louis Landman, but put up an incredibly strong fight against the resurgent blackshirts of Brockway. Paced by the Road Runner-like play of Steve Quigley, the Blackshirts found themselves down at the half, thanks in large part to the yeoman’s effort put forth by Goose keeper/impromptu captain Brian Mathes. However, in the second half Quigs’ effort coupled with strong play from the Blackshirts’ defense caused the Goose effort to fold in the second half, putting the team on a two match losing skid.
There was no time for rest for the Goose side, who were the unlucky side with the quick turnaround in the day’s second match, taking on league leaders Connor’s. Powered by the offensive might of Peter Baird, Neil Mulrooney and Ian Heraty, the Green side jumped all over a suddenly disorganized Blue defense, and went into half-time with what appeared to be a comfortable lead. However, Goose would come out in the second half like a team possessed, scoring point after point and even notching a few goals for good measure, slicing deep into the Connor’s lead. In the end though, Green’s offense was simply too much for the now heavily fatigued Goose to handle, and the Blue skid would continue.
The day’s final match pitted Connor’s against a well-rested, but short-handed and wounded Brockway squad. Despite the lack of fit players, the Blackshirts made a match of it, pushing the Connor’s side to the brink thanks once again to the play of Steve Quigley. When the dust had settled, and wounds were being nursed on the sidelines for all parties involved, the Connor’s side found themselves Fall League Champions, making this one of their most successful seasons ever.
