Thank You Colin
As you may be aware by now, Colin Conlon has taken
the decision to step down as Indy Hurling Club coach. Colin did
not take this decision lightly, but felt that due to work and personal
commitments it was the correct decision for both himself and Indy
Hurling Club. The Indianapolis Hurling Club would like to take the
opportunity to convey their gratitude and thanks to Colin for the
hard work and guidance he has provided during his tenure as coach
to the team. Indeed, were it not for Colin's involvement from an
early stage the club would have found it even more difficult to
gain a foothold here in Indianapolis, and for that achievement alone,
all the club members express their sincere thanks to Colin. Of course,
while he is taking a break from the coaching side of things, Colin
will still be very much involved in the club and will remain as
a player and a selector.
As he has in the past, Ciaran Connery will step up
to take the primary role is training. We're all confident that Ciaran
will continue to build on the solid foundation that Colin helped
create and bring Indy Hurling the success we all desire.
Chicago Recap
Ciaran provided the following recap from Chicago:
What a great day! Indy Hurling Club enjoyed glorious sunshine,
fantastic hospitality and strong competition at the annual hurling
development tournament in Chicago April 21st. Indy Hurling travelled
with both senior and junior teams to participate, make new friends
in the North American hurling fraternity and compete against teams
from far & wide across the US, including St. Louis, Chicago, Seattle,
Washington DC, Milwaukee, Purdue University. The players from
Indy did the club proud and came away with a 1-1 record for the
senior players while the junior team went 2-1. Overall, the whole
day was a thoroughly enjoyable experience for everyone who travelled,
and it certainly has laid a good foundation upon which to build
for the remainder of the season, culminating with the North American
Championships in September 07. A special thanks to the junior
players from North Central H.S. who travelled: Logan, Jon, Scott,
Alex, Matthew, Jake, Matt, Cole & Sean. Thanks also to Mr Barton
and Mr McAlister who were kind enough to provide transportation.
Let's keep the good times rolling for the rest of the season and
continue to enjoy and improve our play of the fastest field game
in the world!!
There are quite a few videos posted to the video
page. Check them out. If someone can give me some captions as
to who's doing what, I'll make sure to update it.
Another New Hurler!
Congratulations to Dave and Madeline Maish on the birth of their
daughter Teagan. Teagan was born on the afternoon of March
15th, both Teagan and her mom are doing great.
Dave, you're hereby excused from practice until the 1st... Lord
knows you and Mom will need the rest.

Brian Church. Church, 30, plays in Indianapolis'
only hurling team, The Indianapolis Irish Hurling Club. The team
will be playing as part of the North American Gaelic Athletic Association
tournaments this year.
What's hurling like in Ireland?
Over in Ireland, hurling is the equivalent of football
here. You've got a park with 80,000 fans screaming for a team, but
it's a still an amateur sport. It's really unique; it's probably
the last purely amateur sport in the world. What I think that does
is it creates a lot of pride in the game. In Ireland, you want to
play in the county you were born in.
What makes it strictly Irish?
It started in Ireland. It's only played at the
really high level in Ireland. Even though it's across the globe,
it's still an Irish sport. There's a lot of pride in playing for
your team. It's very physical; it's very demanding. You play it
with pride. They don't play half-assed, and they never give up.

Annual general meeting—Sunday, January 28, 2007
The annual general meeting took place in Pat
Flynn’s pub at 4pm. Thirteen members of the club were in attendance
and there was a lively discussion about the past success of the
club and the future direction.
The meeting was opened by the chairman’s remarks.
The chairman for the last year was Ian Heraty. He congratulated
everyone on the success of the club and he set three distinct goals
for the club:
Stage 1: Improve recruitment in the club.
Stage 2: Succeed in the North American
championship division 5 tournament.
Stage 3: Obtain a clubhouse and playing
fields within five years.
The chairman also paid tribute to sponsors of
the club, Pat Flynn’s Pub, Connors Pub, Celtic Equipment, Pino Gelato,
and ETA tickets.
The vice chairman, Stephen Quigley, then addressed
the meeting. He said that he intended to step aside from active
participation in the club. Stephen emphasized the importance of
improving our stock of equipment in the club.
Colin Conlon was next to address the meeting.
Colin served as team manager this year. He proposed that we would
have two nights training this year. He suggested Tuesday and Thursday
night at 6.30 pm. The first evening training will be on the 1st
of April.
He is very adamant about participating in the
North American championship for the year ahead. He also stated that
the number of people appearing at away games needs to improve.
Brian Church served as both treasurer and secretary
for the past year. The club has $865 in the club account for the
year as of January 28, 2007.
Andy Hazel served as promotional officer during
the last year. He organized many promotional activities and developed
a line of merchandise for the club. He developed a club logo, a
line of t-shirts and a range of bumper stickers. Mr. Hazel also
suggested that a graphic designer who helped him with the various
designs be paid for his efforts. A sum of fifty dollars was approved
by the club.
Indy Hurling Dinner
Thanks
to all who came to the dinner at Pat Flynn's. We've come a long
way this year. Here's to a safe and successful 2007 campaign!
Club Man- Stephen Quigley
Outstanding Player - Brian Church
Most Improved - Kyle LaPrees
Outstanding Junior Hurler - Kevin McMahon (Pictured with engraved

Thanks to Ian Heraty and Colin Conlon for planning the night and
creating such beautiful awards. The photos do not do the awards
justice. The Indy CLG crest is engraved on the glass with the name
of the award below.
Pino Gelato Indy Hurling Takes the Victory in
West Lafayette

Indy Hurling won a great game in Lafayette
against Purdue. The boys rose to the challenge
playing better together than they have yet all
year. Great goals scored by Ciaran Connery,
Colin Conlon, and Richard Connolly. Tremendous
defense played by Brian Mathes, Dave Maish, and
of course big Peter the Baird in goal. Thanks to
all of the lads who played hard through the
fall-cold and rainy at times-and made the
journey up to Purdue. An extra special thanks to
Peter Mackey who did 90mph up I-65 to make the
game only to get cracked in the skull ten
minutes in. The man played the second half with
a knot the size of your thumb. Very brave, man.

One of many casualties.
North Central High School Hurling Club
Ends Season

North Central
Hurling Club divided up and played two games on
Tuesday, October 24. Great hustle out there! The
fans really enjoyed watching. We'll get it
started again when the weather breaks. The team
has come a long way with the help of Coach
Ciaran Connery and Coach Stephen Quigley. Thanks
to all of those who have helped out. Also,
thanks to the Irish Store for sponsoring the
team's forthcoming t-shirts.

Men's Fitness Article on Hurling
Now on the Newsstand
(Nice to see an American magazine covering
the greatest of sports!)
by Joe Gould
The Irish regard soggy mist as an old
friend. Unfortunately, the mist that's hanging
like a veil over Cusack Park today is a bit of a
bitch. And for the 30 men crowding the playing
field in the small town of Ennis (just north of
Limerick), the dampness changes everything about
the game they're playing, making the fist-sized
ball they're used to tossing about seem like a
greased trout they have to struggle to control.
Not that the players or the thousands of
riotous, screaming fans in the stands even
notice. After all, this is no typical game of
football, basketball, or soccer. It's hurling,
the national sport of Ireland. And regardless of
just how bad the weather gets, the game will go
on today just as it has for thousands of years.
And that's why MF is
here. Because in a sports world where hockey
players sit out entire seasons due to contract
disputes, b-ballers spend more money on bar tabs
and bling than some families make in an entire
year, and bloated baseball salaries have changed
the very way fans root for their team, hurling
remains an anachronism of the sports world—an
incredibly popular team sport with a massive
number of fans, played entirely by amateur
athletes who fill stadiums on weekends and go
back to their day jobs come Monday morning.

Connor's Pub
Saturday, November 25
We are meeting at
Connor's Pub on Saturday, November 25 at 5:00
P.M. for a stout session. No politics, just good
craic. Later in the year we will have a family
dinner at Pat Flynn's Pub. At that event, we
will pass out a few awards and a few of the boys
will have a word or two to say. Also this fall,
we will hold a General Meeting to elect new club
officers. Many of you have good ideas in terms
of where this club should go and how we will get
there; Indy Hurling needs you to help it grow.

Indy Hurling Members Welcome at Chicago's
Gaelic Park
Sunday, October 1, members of Indy Hurling
have been invited to play in Chicago at Gaelic
Park for a development day along with Milwaukee,
St. Louis, Purdue, and Indiana. Any player, new
or old, interested in attending should contact
Coach Conlon for information. We are not sending
a team as many of the players have other
commitments, yet the organizers of the day are
still encouraging us to send up anyone who wants
to make the drive and represent the club.
Purdue Defeats Indianapolis Pino Gelato
September,
24. Purdue took Sunday's match 6-5, 5-5 against
Indianapolis Pino Gelato on a very muddy Lake
Sullivan's Pitch. The teams played a 13-a-side
line-out and were fairly evenly matched, which
made for exciting hurling for the many
spectators on hand. Purdue led the first half
5-2, 2-2 with hard play that stunned
Indianapolis. At the half, Indianapolis
regrouped and battled back quickly to go ahead
of their rivals. Yet, Purdue could not stand to
be vanquished and scored a goal and a point late
in the game that locked up the victory. Purdue
and Indy Hurling rematch on October 14 at
Lafayette.

Indy Irish Fest
Thanks to all of the volunteers who gave
their time to the club this past weekend for
Irish Fest. Extra special thanks goes to the
guys who set up and cleaned up on their
respective days. One such example is Tim Fick,
who closed up Saturday night, drove to
Bloomington, and returned to Indy Sunday morning
to set up--talk about commitment.
Thanks also to all of the people who came up
to the booth to introduce themselves. We are
always looking for new players. Along with
having fun and learning the skills, our goal is
to form yet another team in our intraleague--we
need your help.
We also had much interest from women and
juniors who want to take up hurling. IndyHurling
wants to make the club accessible to all players
who are passionate about Gaelic sport.
We heard lots of hurling rumors this weekend:
that Kentucky University is forming a team; that
Columbus, Ohio is organizing; as is Fort
Wayne--let's hope that these clubs do come into
existence. Locally, Tim and Sean Fick are
working hard to get Indiana University going.

Connor's Wins Again
On Sunday, September 10, Indy Hurling made
another great showing out on the pitch, giving
spectators another exciting, balanced game.
Connor's won the match narrowly.
Next weekend is Irish Fest! (September 15-17)
Come out and support Indy Hurling at Irish Fest!
Stop by the tent and introduce yourself.
The Sunday after, September 24, is Indy
Hurling Pino Gelato's first meeting against
Purdue University. That game takes place at
10:00 A.M. on the Lake Sullivan Pitch.
The final Purdue game will be played
mid-October at Purdue.
Connor's Pub Wins Fall Season Opener
Aug 29, 2006 - Sunday showcased a beautiful
game of hurling out on the Lake Sullivan
Pitch--probably the best, yet. Connor's Pub
defeated Pat Flynn's Pub 2-11, 2-8. Many new
players took to the pitch for their first match
to supplement the usual suspects. Connor Murphy,
Mike Sotolongo, and Brian Mathes all played
their first hurling match with great success,
while native-born Irishmen Ciaran Connery and
Peter Baird played their first match state-side.
Terry Bate received three cheers from the
boys as he is returning to Melbourne, Australia
this week after playing in the league through
the Spring and Summer. Though we will see him at
the next few practices, Matt Cohlmia also played
his last game in the Indy Hurling League. He is
returning to school at Northwestern in Evanston
where he hopes to found a hurling club to take
on our friends at Purdue University.

Pat Flynn's Pub Win the Indianapolis Celtic Cup
June 25, 2006 - Filed by Matt Davis
Pat Flynn's won the Indianapolis Celtic Cup
championship this past Sunday in a decisive
victory over Connor's Pub 5-15, 3-8.
As both teams were missing some key hurlers,
including Kyle LaPrees for Pat Flynn's and Sean
Scott for Connor's Pub, uncertainty seemed to
hang over the Lake Sullivan pitch like a dense,
soupy fog.
Soon after the initial puck-out, Connor's Pub
moved the sliotar down the field and drew first
blood, scoring a goal with perceived ease. Just
as easy, it seemed, Connor's forward Mike Yaggi
scored a point from about 80 yards out. The
glory for Connor's was short-lived, however, as
Pat Flynn's released an onslaught of shots on
goal that relented only after the final whistle
was blown. Pat Flynn's two native Irishmen, Ian
Heraty and Peter Mackey, maintained a solid
midfield for their team while Americans Adam
Layton and Matt Ellinger led the charge on the
Connor's goal as flanking forwards.
Shortly before halftime, Connor's midfielder
Steve Quigley was injured. In his absence,
however, the Connor's Pub midfield collapsed.
Some of the team's most proficient hurlers had
difficulty just getting the sliotar into their
hands and others missed free after free after
free. Some substitutions were made, but to no
avail.
Although Connor's goalkeeper Bob Finley and
lone defender Matt Davis spoiled many of Pat
Flynn's opportunities, at the end of the day the
steady tide of blue shirts proved too much. The
inaugural Celtic Cup Championship set the
standard for years to come as a hard fought
match by one and all. Congratulations Pat
Flynn's Hurling Club!
Connor's Continue Their Winning Ways
June 11, 2006
Connor's won another victory on Sunday (4-9,
3-10) moving ahead of Pat Flynn's in the COED
League standings. Neal Mulrooney played a solid
game in midfield for Connor's while Peter Mackey
scored three goals for Pat Flynn's using his
quickness and soloing skills. Brenda Gallagher
of County Down played her final game for
Connor's Pub as she is returning to England in
the coming weeks--we wish her well. (Also,
Brenda is a fine fiddler and will play her final
night at The Golden Ace on Tuesday at 7:30 or
so--come and wish her goodbye.) Indy Hurling
will also lose Sean Fick of Pat Flynn's who is
spending the summer in Alaska working for the
fishing industry. Good luck, lad, and we'll get
Indiana University Hurling going next fall.

Connor's Pub Takes the Victory/Heraty Injured
in Final Minutes

Connor's Pub came out
firing Sunday hoping to even up their record
with Pat Flynn's. They did just that 5-6/ 3-10
(Read 21-19), perhaps due to a late-game injury
that benched Pat Flynn's star midfielder, Ian
Heraty. Connor's Pub got the points when they
counted with Brian Church scored 2 goals and 3
points, while Stephen Quigley and Colin Conlon
each scored 1 goal and 1 point. Before Heraty twisted his ankle on
loose piece of sod, he scored 1 goal and 5 points
while his teammate Peter Mackey added 2 goals and
5 points. Sean Fick and his father, Tim, played
excellent minutes for Pat Flynn's.
Matt Davis and Mike Yaggi played a great game
for Connors at forwards, the latter scoring a
goal while the defense was held down by Colin
Conlon and Sean Scott. Andy Hazel and Kyle
LaPrees continued their strong play as backs for
Pat Flynn's aided by newcomers Adam Layton and
Aussie-Aussie-Aussie Terry Bate.
Also Worth Mentioning: Thank you to
all of the many fans who came out to cheer on
the league. Your support is greatly appreciated.
Thanks also goes to the Rugby team for sharing
their pitch with us.

A Historic Moment for Indy Hurling
Indy
Hurling wants to welcome Brenda Gallagher of
County Down to the club, as she is on loan to us
from her club in Birmingham, England. Having
played in Croke Park in an All-Ireland Camogie
Final, you can believe that she showed the lads
a thing or two about how to hit a sliotar on the
pitch. She will be playing with our club for
another three weeks before returning to England.
Gallagher, an engineer at Rolls Royce, is Indy GAA's first female member.
Connor's Pub improved their play this past
Sunday to draw with Pat Flynn's Pub 3-6, 3-6
(READ: 15-15). Bob Finley led Connor's with four
points. Pat Flynn's controlled most of the game
with solid defense from their backs and great
shooting from their two ringers, Ian Heraty and
Peter Mackey of County Mayo and County Waterford
respectively.
Support the Indy GAA on Sunday 6/4 at 5:00 as the league plays
their third match on the Lake Sullivan Pitch.
Directions Players, please arrive

the final score 1-4 / 0-6 (READ 7-6) in favor of
IH. IH's Brian Church scored the only goal of
the game from 65 yards out. IH's four points
were all scored by Ian Heraty of County Mayo.
Solid defense played by the IH backs M. Davis,
K. LaPrees, and A. Hazel who allowed no goals.
Due to injury, IH played most of the second half
with no subs--a valiant effort.
June 4, Sunday Preview
Connor's Pub will try to even their record
with Pat Flynn's on Sunday June 4th. Connor's
will bring a strong lineup with Ryan Doyle and
Brian Church at midfield and Firing Bob/Rob
Finley at full-forward. They will also benefit
from the play of Brenda Gallagher of County Down
who will make her first appearance out on the
Sunday pitch. Pat Flynn's will need the help of
the Fighten' Ficks at full-forward to gain an
advantage over their Pub League rivals. Also
crucial is the play of Kyle LaPrees at
full-back, a formidable defender with the size
to shut down Connor's forwards.
Players arrive at 4:30 for warm-ups
on the Lake Sullivan Pitch. Match begins at 5:00. Afters at Pat
Flynn's. Bring the whole family-Pat Flynn's is child friendly.
