Indy Hurling League 08

There are NO league games this Sunday. This is because....wait for it.....it's Mother's Day.....aaaahhh isn't that sweet....the next round of league games are scheduled for Sunday, May 18th at Richardt Park. Anyway, we have instead scheduled a practice/skills competition (with outstanding potential prizes) for Lake Sullivan pitch on Saturday, May 10th at 1pm.

This replaces a previous plan to play a team from Chicago.

After great wins last week by Connors and Mc Cools. The league is all tied up at the top, with all 4 teams on 2 wins and 2 loses. This speaks great on the debate about teams being fair

Next league games are in Richardt Park on May 18th at 10am. Game 1 will see Flynn’s v Bloomington, with Game 2 Mc Cools v Connors immediately afterwards. Keep team captains informed about your availability please. Followed by food and drinks at Pat Fylnn's.

Thanks again to everyone who has played and to those who have come out to watch and support the league.

Next practice is in Broad Ripple Park on Wednesday 7th May at 6pm.;

Committee Meeting May 5th

The main points concerning players are as follows;

Dates for the Diary

1. Proposal to travel to Chicago on June 14th to play the newly formed Junior team up there - we've swapped this around because we can't go to them on Memorial Day weekend. I've said it before but it is important that we support these lads in their efforts to promote hurling among US-born players in Chicago. In return, they are willing to travel down here in August to play at Habig Fields. Please let me know if your interested in traveling to Chicago on June 14th - we would be playing at Gaelic Park.

General Info

2. From now on, team captains are to nominate 3 people from their team to provide line/goal judges for Indy league games. In other words, if Connors play Flynns, then 3 line/goal judges will come from B'town and another 3 judges from MacCools. These judges should be in place prior to the start of each game.

3. "Volunteers" for a refereeing panel will be identified in the coming weeks.

4. Trip to Ireland 2009. To date, I have heard from 16 people. That means - yes, you've guessed it - there are a lot more of you out there that need to let me know one way or the other if you intend to travel. So please think about it and get back to Ciaran asap for what promises to be a great trip...!! Remember, it's good to talk. So, get back to Ciaran.

If you have NOT paid your Dues it needs to be in to be considered for our inner league games. The team shorts have come in so get your money in, if you want them.

The Ancient And Grand Sport of Hurling

I've lost track of the number of times I've had to tell people that hurling is NOT the game where you slide rocks down the ice (that's curling, btw).

Hurling is an ancient sport that pre-dates written Irish history. In Irish folk tales, the great folk hero CuChulain got his name when he defended himself against a great attack dog with a hurley and sliotar. Today, hurling is one of the national sports of Ireland. The All-Ireland Finals held every fall consistently draw 60,000-70,000 spectators.
